EXTRA NOTES: Mildred wrote many letters to my mother; many of these letters I inherited after Momma died in 1997. She loved my mom and family. She was very sweet hearted person. She took us to the Moravian Easter Sunrise Service several times during my childhood. I remember setting out the clothes to dress into, the night before and an early to bed, while it was still dark outside Momma would wake us up and get us all dressed in out Easter Sunday best and off in the car to the service. We would wait outside in the cold dark and while we heard the Easter surmmon and then wait to watch the sun come up. After that we went home. It had a big impression on me, the ritual of it all. I complained a lot, and I am sure it was an ordeal for my Momma to get us all ready and off for this big event, but she felt doing things like this was an important part of being alive. A number of time we toured through the Moravian section and historic village in Old Salem. CLS.
=====
==
letter dated March 20, 1975, as is usual for Mildred Williams it is typed on a typewriter, rather than being written by hand. A few of her letters are hand written however. She just liked her "IBM" as she called it.
mentions: Williams family in Arkansas--

"Dear Chester, Wednesday
"I went over (he had great difficulty getting me to say over rather than down. But Memphis id due west of W-S, so maybe I'll remember one of these days. Oh, I did not finish the first sentence in this paragraph. I went over Friday morning and returned Sunday night. So I had a nice long visit. We crossed a new bridge (the Mississippi) from Memphis to Arkansas. I remembered some of the Williams coming from Malvern--but we didn't get there. The Peabody Hotel is a beautiful old hotel- I wish I knew how many years it has been there.__"
I'll be thinking about you all and loving you all always and always. Mildred."
end note.
(NOTE_CLS_that would be Malvern, Arkansas. Clara Nannie Williams, my grandmother, and Nancy Chester Sutton's momma, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas or Malvern, Arkansas.)

A Greensboro, North Carolina, Newspaper, The Greensboro Daily News
photo caption:
MR. AND MRS. WILLIAMS AND FRIENDS

"Duke and Mary Parker Williams, Reidsvillians who are ex-Gate Citizens, are separated in this photo.-cont.
Between them is the fellow who made the presentation for the Southern Retail Furniture Association of the John Willis Jr. Award for "Distinguished service in the furniture industry and leadership in his community." The gent presenting it is Robert Gruenberg of Chicago, director of services for the National Retail Furniture Association. The gent getting it is Harold Thomas Williams the Duke himself.

Also in the phot are the donors, Grayson Willis, left, Mrs. Grayson Willis and Ben Willis all of Norfolk. This is the ninth time the award has been bestowed and this is the cloesest it have ever come to Greensboro.

Duke and Mary Parker stopped by yesterday to leave the picture en route to High Point. Leo Heer, manger of the Southern Firniture Exposition Building, had asked Duke to put the trophy- a magnificent silver punch bowl, ladle and elaborately engraved 19 -inch tray - on display during the July "market".

The presentation was June 12 (1962) at Hollywood, Fla. , convention of the SFRA, and was followed by a champagne party honoring Duke and his spouse.

It was all a surprise to the Williamses. In fact, says Mary Parker, it was the biggest surprise since she, as Mary Parker Fryar, was named "Service" on her Woman's College graduation. Duke, incidentally, is a Carolina grad.

And what about the community service which helped bring furniture dealer Williams the big honor. For 17 years he's been on the Rockingham County Board of Health. He's been presiden of the Reidsville Chamber of Commerce, Merchants Association and Rotary Club. He has been a Sunday school teacher in Reidsville's First Baptist Church. He was chairman of the City of Reidsville's planning board for four years."

I am looking for a Wright Williams that died in TN around 1847-1848. He was either born in TN or AL abt 1811. I have the obituary of his wife who moved to AR. Her name was Lucinda, I have found a Wright Williams married to a Lucinda Pigg, this is not the same one. Lucinda maiden name was Clem. Wright had 3 childern w/ Lucinda before he died. William, David, and Lucinda. David is my g-g-grandfather.

Here is Lucinda's Obituary. (Lucinda Clem Williams Hitchcock)
On Wednesday July 8, 1903 at the home of her grand-daugther, Mrs. Sterling Elder, three miles east of Hollywood, Mrs. Lucinda H. Hitchcock, aged 84 years. Miss Lucinda Clem was born in Tenn., and was the oldest of sixteen childern. At the early age of 14 she professed religion and joined the M. E. Church of which she has since been and constant and zealous worker. In 1842 she married Wright Williams who only lived five years. Again in 1848 she married Lorenza Hitchcock. She was the mother of five childern, only one son, W. H. Williams, surviving. She leaves five grand-children, ten great-grandchildren, five brothers, three sisters and her friends were many for she was loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Hitchcock was one fo the most devoted Christians we have ever known. She had often remarked the during 70 years service for her Master she was never tired of work. For her the work was a pleasure. She had suffered untold agony for months and while we cannot understand why the Lord sent such suffering to one whose life has always been so pure, we can only bow in humble submission to Him who doeth all things for the best and feel assured that she is at perfect rest.

A Friend.

On Dec 12, 1874 the Bethel-Union Baptist church changed its name to the Degray Baptist church. They have the church records on micro-film at the Arkansas History Commision in Little Rock. My whole family have been members of that church and one time or another for the past 120 years.

The church you have reference to is not the one that we are or at least the one I was referring to as Mt. Bethel that I am familiar with is still very much in existance and celebrated it 100th anniversary while Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas and he attended the celebration. I know the Degray community and this is another entirely different church. My family of Mannings help found Mt . Bethel along with Wiley Rogers.
