The greater portion of this regiment was organized in the valley of the Little Kanawha. The efforts of Col. J. C.Rathbone, its first Col., finally orginized the regiment. Do you mean this tombstone is no longer in sight at Douglas Cemetery, Douglas City, North Dakota, has it been taken away somewhere? If so where is it now?Do you have a photo of the military headstone of Thaddeus Sutton??With your permission I will add this picture to my lead page and give you credit.

Hi Carol,
This is the headstone in the Douglas City Cemetery.   I am assuming that the original stone became unreadable and the US Military replaced it with a new stone.   The local air force base is very good about making sure that veterans have a nice headstone.   Feel free to use the picture.

BRANCH VIII in Captain Gabiel Sustaire (Blue) Book

Thomas or John Thomas Sistare left New London, Connecticut after the death of his first wife, Lucretia Jones, who died at age 25 and had no children. He sailed South and was shipwrecked off Charleston, South Carolina. He later remarried and had 16 children with his second wife, Mary Gwendolyn Outen, 8 of which lived and carried on the Sistare (Sustare) family in the South. The Southern branch is working on a more detailed genealogy. It was the Southern branch that changed the name spellings to the many different ones listed above, the Sustare one being the most used spelling.=========John Thomas Sistare commanded his own ship. ++++++++

search : Cedar Creek engagement, CSA:

Major General Joseph Brevard Kershaw - - - -Please accept this photograph of my great-great-great uncle. His service record and the unit that bears his name (Kershaw's Brigade) are well known to all true compatriots. His original command, the Second South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was used throughout the war as one of Marse Robert's favorite "shock" troops. Throughout the regiment's entire history, they never left the field in the hands of the federals with the exception of Cedar Creek. In that engagement, they were swept from the field by the retreat of their sister unit, the Third South Carolina Regiment. The attached image was made in late 1862, just after his promotion to Brigadier General.

Respectfully submitted,   William Charles Russell Major

"ORGANIZATION:

48th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Men of this unit were recruited in the counties of Union, Davidson, Iredell, Moore, Chatham, and Forsyth. Ordered to Virginia, the regiment was assigned to General J.G. Walker's and Cooke's Brigade. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Fredericksburg , then moved to Pocataligo, South Carolina, where it was stationed until August, 1863. Returning to Virginia, the 48th was involved in the conflicts at Bristoe, The Wilderness , Spotsylvania , and Cold Harbor . It then endured the hardships of the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox operations. It reported 18 killed and 70 wounded at Oak Grove , lost over fifty percent of the 400 in the Maryland Campaign, and sustained 175 casualties at Fredericksburg and 123 at Bristoe. The unit surrendered with 12 officers and 87 men. "

48th North Carolina Infantry

BY W. H. H. LAWHON, CAPTAIN COMPANY D.

The great civil war began in 1861. Several companies made up in the summer of 1861, composed of volunteers for twelve months, in the Spring of 1862 reorganized for three years or the war. The battles of Big Bethel, First Manassas and others had been fought; the result of which had given the Southern troops courage, and some men in North Carolina, who had been opposed to secession, were now changing their minds, so that in the Winter of 1861 and 1862 preparations were being made on both sides for the next summer's campaign. The Federal army was recruiting so rapidly that the authorities of the Confederacy saw that they would have to meet a heavy force in the field the next summer, so a draft was ordered in North Carolina 25 February, 1862.

At this time volunteer companies were being raised in all parts of the State. Many of the patriotic sons of North Carolina voluteered, most of the men who were drafted joined some company then being raised. A few hired substitutes who joined and thns the companies were rapidly filled up and hurried off to the camp of instruction, near Raleigh, and as they arrived they were formed into regiments. The Forty-eighth was composed of the following companies:

found Pineville and Matthews:

Pineville

Pineville, eleven miles to the south of Charlotte on U.S. Route 21, near the South Carolina line, was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1872. Nearby is the birthplace of James Knox Polk, eleventh President of the United States. The site, one mile from the Pineville railroad station and 220 feet off the highway, is marked by a rubble-stone pyramid fifteen feet high.

Another distinction of which the town is proud is that it was probably the first in North Carolina to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages, in fact, the original charter so provides.

Originally known as "Morrow's Turnout," the busy little town became Pineville with the opening of the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad in 1852. Not long after the Civil War, one merchant, Tom Younts, was doing a retail business of more than $100,000 annually at Pineville, and by 1900 there were ten stores operating in the village.

48th North Carolina Infantry
QUOTE: "BY W. H.

COMPANY A-Union County-Francis L. Wiatt, Captain.
COMPANY B-Davidson County-Albert A. Hill, Captain
COMPANY C-Iredell County-Arthur M. Walker; Captain
COMPANY D-Moore County-Benjamin R. Huske, Captain
COMPANY F-Union County-John W. Walden, Captain
COMPANY F-Union County-Samuel H. Walkup, Captain
COMPANY G-Chatham County-William H. Jones, Captain
COMPANY H-Da.rid son Coun~ty- John Michael, Captain.
COMPANY I-Union Covnty-Elias C. Alexander, Captain.
COMPANY K-Forsyth County- Jesse W. Atwood, Captain.
http://members.aol.com/jweaver303/nc/48ncinf.htm

It was organized on 11 April, 1862, choosing:

ROBERT C. HILL-Colonel, of Iredell County.
SAMUEL H. WALKUP, Lieutenant-Colonel, of Union County.
BENJAMIN R. HUSKE, Major, of Cumberland County.

notes: Lieutenant-Colonel S. H. Walkup was made Colonel. He was one of the bravest officers in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was often laughed at on dress parade and brigade drill for his awkwardness, but when in battle all that knew him were satisfied that Walkup was there and that his regiment would do its duty. by W. H. H. LAWHON;.Moore Co., N. C., 9 APRIL, 1901.

The Civil War in South Carolina
1st (Hagood's) Infantry Regiment
QUOTE from site: "HISTORICAL NOTES:
1st Regiment Volunteers completed its organization at Barnwell, South Carolina, in December, 1860, and entered Confederate service in April, 1861. Its companies were raised in Charleston and the counties of Orangeburg, Lancaster, Barnwell, Greenville, Colleton, and Richland. The regiment served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, then moved to Virginia and brigaded under Generals Jenkins abd Bratton. It fought at South Mountain , Sharpsburg , and Fredericksburg , and later served under Longstreet at Suffolk and D.H. Hill in North Carolina. Again it was with Longstreet, but the unit did not take part in the conflict at Chickamauga. After fighting in the Knoxville operations the unit participated in the battles at The Wilderness , Spotsylvania , and Cold Harbor , the Petersburg siege, and the Appomattox Campaign. It reported 16 casualties at South Mountain , 40 at Sharpsburg , 1 at Fredericksburg , and 45 at Wauhatchie . Of the 169 engaged at Spotsylvania , thirteen percent were disabled, and from June 13 to December 31, 1864, there were 17 killed, 89 wounded, and 17 missing. It surrendered 21 officers and 201 men.
A history of this regiment was written by Gen. Hagood after the war. Excerpts from this book are included here regarding the organization of this regiment.

Quote: "Company D was probably formed from the Greer, Mountain View, and the upper end of Greenville County. It is a highland company and is one of the most difficult to work with. Large numbers of certain families and uncertain reporting make for more problems. It appears to have been a hard luck company and suffered more for officers and in death than other companies. There are fewer wounded but many more killed in action. D is not the Company in the Sixteenth with the worst luck, but it is probably second. Sorting out D Company will never completely happen, but we continue to try. [skip]
Quote;
Of the 185 men of Company D: 28 were captured, 14 at Missionary Ridge, which is known by several names, three at Franklin and one at Nashville. Two were captured at Atlanta and Marietta and one each at Citronelle, Alabama, Kennesaw Mt., Macon, Pine Mt. and Spring Hill. The Spring Hill capture should probably be included with Nashville. In one case it is unknown where the capture took place.

plus + this update Civil War data on Pleasant Calloway Ferguson from James Vermillion.

[NewVermillion.FTW]
Pleasant fought in the civil war for the confederate army. He originally
registed in Union Co., He was a Pvt Co. 1, 48th Infantry (State Troops).
He was taken prisoner at Fort Lookout prison in Maryland. His wife
Martha [ C.L. Sutton added in: Martha Elizabeth "Patsy" BLACKMON, died at age 35.] died while he was away in the war. When he returned he married his
2nd wife, Clarentine C. Hough ( his 2nd cousin). [C. Sutton added in: Clarentine C. Hough was age 25 years and 53 days, at the marriage date to Pleasant Calloway Ferguson, who was age 38 years and 318 days, at the time of his second marriage. The marriage length of time was 41 years and 79 days. ]
of It was rumored that
his son John Franklin Ferguson had a crush on Pleasants much younger
wife. She was actually younger than John Franklin was.
Pleasant was said to be a man of very strong or mean character. It has
been told through family history that if his 2nd wife Clarentine did not
have his lunch ready at exactly noon, then he would go out into the hog
pin and get his boots full of mud (and other things), then he would jump
up and down on the bed, which was covered with a handmade white quilt. He
also denied his daughter Emily and her husband John, peaches from his
orchard. He told them he would rather feed the peaches to the hogs.
Pleasant originally owned 1300 acres in Mecklenburg, Union and Cabarrus
counties.
[ C.L. Sutton added in: It appears from this tellling description of his character that Pleasant was not so pleasant after all. Poor Clarentin to have to put up with such a man as that. Pleasant Calloway Ferguson and Clarentine C.Hough, daughter of Moses Monda HOUGH and Nancy Ferguson.]
