He sailed South and was shipwrecked off Charleston, South Carolina. He later remarried and had 16 children with his second wife, Mary Gwendolyn Outen, 8 of which lived and carried on the Sistare (Sustare) family in the South. The Southern branch is working on a more detailed genealogy. Major General Joseph Brevard Kershaw - - - -Please accept this photograph of my great-great-great uncle. His service record and the unit that bears his name (Kershaw's Brigade) are well known to all true compatriots. His original command, the Second South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was used throughout the war as one of Marse Robert's favorite "shock" troops. Throughout the regiment's entire history, they never left the field in the hands of the federals with the exception of Cedar Creek. In that engagement, they were swept from the field by the retreat of their sister unit, the Third South Carolina Regiment. The attached image was made in late 1862, just after his promotion to Brigadier General. Respectfully submitted, William Charles Russell Major +__________________________+ http://www.ehistory.com/uscw/features/battles/ viewcasualties2.cfm?SortOrder=2 |

Nearby is the birthplace of James Knox Polk, eleventh President of the United States. The site, one mile from the Pineville railroad station and 220 feet off the highway, is marked by a rubble-stone pyramid fifteen feet high. Another distinction of which the town is proud is that it was probably the first in North Carolina to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages, in fact, the original charter so provides. Originally known as "Morrow's Turnout," the busy little town became Pineville with the opening of the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad in 1852. Not long after the Civil War, one merchant, Tom Younts, was doing a retail business of more than $100,000 annually at Pineville, and by 1900 there were ten stores operating in the village. +__________________________+
The 37th Regiment N.C. Troops was organized at Camp Fisher, near High Point, where it was mustered into state service for twelve months' active duty on November 20, 1861. Shortly thereafter the regiment moved to Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, where it was transferred to Confederate service effective January 1, 1862. The regiment remained at Camp Mangum until January 10, when it was ordered to New Bern. At that time the regiment was reported to be "imperfectly" armed and "considerably reduced in effective men by sickness, principally measles and mumps." (Official Records, Series I, Vol. IV, p. 719.) At New Bern the regiment went into camp at Camp Tadpole; on February 11 it moved to Camp Lee, below New Bern." ROSTER: Company H, 37th NC State Troops
