NEWSPAPER article from a North Carolina newpaper, or from the 'Norfolk Ledger Star'--? , "Friday, December 27, 1946, Lend Lease Was Effective In Austraiia, Sustare Says"-United States Lend-Lease was very effective as an aid to Australia, John W. Sustare, formerly of Norfolk, and a member of the staff of the State Department detailed for Lend-Lease and liquidation of surplus supplies in the Pacific, said today. On a visit here with members of his family, Sustare said that he was in Australia for about two years, going out in 1944 and coming back recently after a six months service in Manila. He forecast that practically all of the surplus United States property in the Pacific would be sold on the spot. Sustare was stationed in Sydney, and after the war his wife and child joined him. They were with him for the rest of his Pacific tour of duty. "The canning industry was set up in Austrailia with machinery sent out from the United States," Sustare said. Her praised the Australians for their war effort and declared that for some time 95 percent of the food for American troops in the Pacific area was provided by the Australians. He explained that the forod was on reverse Lend-Lease. Among other observations made by Sustare was that, "Income tax in Australia begins at 33 per cent," Prior to becoming a member of the staff of the State Department , Sustare was employed by the Norfolk office of Remington-Rand.
