If Chester Clay Williams died on
this date;
Died: 1 Oct 1918, Ligne(y), France,Battlefield,
and was a member of the Engineers, Rainbow Divison,
Of Hickory, North Carolina. The campaign fought then by the 30th Division
was the St. Souplet battle in support of the: "4th Army were
engulfed in the breach of the Hindenburg Line," I have found a site
that outline those battles in French, with photographs, maps and other material:

- The chart of the battle I explained, in the preceding
chapter, how the attack carried out by the 27e and 30e American Divisions
had been followed, on September 30, by the continuous advance of 3rd and
the 5th Australian Divisions.
- The troops of support of the 4th Army were engulfed in
the breach of the Hindenburg Line, benefitting from the great disorganization
creates in the enemy troops, result of hard and constant battle which had
settled.
- On October 1 the Rawlinson General directed the battle
planned for the morning of October 3 to 6h 05 with the goal to seize the
heights of the Mannequin hill and the villages Montbrehain and Beaurevoir
as well as Prospect hill in the North-East Gouy. As a whole, this attack
was a success. The enemy tried to keep Ramicourt but was driven out by
it. In Montbrehain, the Britanniques troops made approximately 1000 prisoners
and took a field artillery battery. The enemy continued to move back. The
Beaurevoir-Gouy road was practically reached without opposition. Close
to the Northern exit of the tunnel (of the channel), the Macquincourt farm
was one of the last points of resistance to be released.
- continues;
- On October 6, IIe American Body, composed of the 27e
and 30e Divisions, was again affected in active operation with the 4th
Army. As envisaged the 30e Division took the head with the 27e Division
in support. This day there, the 53e brigade advanced until the surroundings
of Tincourt and the next day, to the surroundings of Hervilly, the 54e
brigade occupying the ground left by the 53e brigade.
- John F. O'Ryan, Général de Division, 16
Octobre 1918.
