Alvertie M. Queen founded in 1905, Electric Machine Company in Norfolk, Virginia, at the corner of Granby St. and Wilson Avenue. Alvertie was a strong woman. My father told me she had long thin and skilled fingers and could wind a motor coil deftly in minutes. Alvertie trained about 8 young men to work for her, one of which was my grandfather and her son Porter Odry Sutton. Others who worked under her went on to found their own companies, such as Lawrence R. Crutsinger,, who went on to found 'Auto Electric Service', Basford, who became an Airport Pilot and Charlie Wallace, who founded 'Charles Wallace Electric'. I was told that she had to be strong because James tried out different schemes that did not turn out well. See full book listing below---

Notes: Occupation of Capt. Crocker: Seaman, Stream Boat Captain-Lists: David Crocker, Captain Of The Barge "Roanoke", lived at H 40 Main St., *Norfolk, Virginia,in the 1872 Norfolk Directory, was murdered by a deck hand on his ship, and his body thrown overboard and later washed up near Allegator River ,Albermtrle Sound.

Bernard Lee Gallop told me the murderer was so remorseful that he jumped overbroad commiting suicide. Then my sister Nancy T. Sutton Nowlan told me more on the same story.

STORY:s

CAPTAIN CROCKER MURDERED ON HIS SHIP new3.gif

Then, Nancy Townsend Sutton Nowlan, my sister, told me more on the story of Capt. Crocker. Captain Crocker's body, after he was thrown overboard from his ship (may have been: The Barge "Roanoke",), later washed up near Alligator River ,Albemarle Sound, North Carolina, and was buried near Harbinger, N.C. (Albemarle Sound is a large estuary on the coast of North Carolina)

Then years later his Son-In-Law or his Son had Captain Crocker's body exhumed, moved and reburied, in Norfolk, Virginia. Both my sister Nancy Townsend Sutton Nowlan and my father's second cousin (Robert William Sutton) , Bertie Winn Campbell (Mrs. Fred Campbell of Chesapeake, Va. and Nancy did extensive research for his grave records, but cannot find any records of him in Norfolk, Virginia cemeteries. Not in Forest Lawn or in Elmwood Cemetery. Nancy said he could be in a Church cemetery or 'double buried', where two bodies are put into one grave. **
