Sustare is in the yearbook, 1913, WAKE FOREST COLLEGE; 'The Howler'. He Would Have Been A Sophomore In 1913. Wake Forest College, L.L.B. Degree In 1915 And Had Practiced Law In Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Since 1960. B.T. Sustare praciticed law in the firm of PRUITT & SUSTARE-Attorneys At Law, Hickory, North Carolina, Thomas P. Pruitt and Beverly T. Sustare -1915-1916.

[NOTE: As was the custom at the time of 1910, the men's names have only first initials, but the women's given names are spelled out in full, along with their surname. Fashion of the times I guess. You had to "Tuff It Out" to graduate, otherwise your given names are not worth a mention other than as initials .]

[The Societies were divide by sex. There were female literary socities and male literary socities. Female socities were The Eumeanean Literary Society, and the Philalethean Literary Society. Male societies were the Chrestonian Literary Society{B.T. SUSTARE was a member -See photo and list on link page}, the Euronian Literary Society. . Other groups were mixed as was the Orchestra, the Business Class , the Expression Class, the Lenorian Staff, the Dramatic Club. Atheletics were also divided by sex. Male sports were football and baseball. While the female sport was The Basket Ball Association.]

MEDICAL EVENT- A SMALLPOX SCARE. JANUARY 1910 THE ENTIRE COLLEGE IS VACCINATED.

According to the 'DIARY' at the end of the 'HACAWA 1910 ', there was a smallpox scare at Lenoir College in Hickory, North Carolina. This occurred after everyone had had their December exams, and had returned most by train ,

• "January 5, [1910-year added in by C.L.S.] Every train brings new and old students."
• Just three days later, "January 8. Smallpox scare.
• January 9. Girls vaccinated.
• January 10. Boys ditto.
• January 11. Girls go home to prevent having their beautiful arms disfigured.
• January 12. Sore arms.
• January 13. No school. Pictures made.
• January 16. 26 girls in the infirmary.
• January 17. Co-eds "At Home" to the boys.
• January 18. Eller and Miss -- spend one hour in the following conversation: "Glad to know you. " "How is your arm?" "It's all right. "

There is a cartoon drawing 'SEEN AROUND COLLEGE', which has the illustration of an arm with a double x mark on it and the caption, "What happened to every one during January."

1c. TIPS FROM READERS. Gems via the Alma Mater

My grandparents all passed away when I was quite young, so I never

really go to know them or their few siblings. After starting the family

hunt, however, I found out the name of the college that my grandaunt had

attended. From there, I contacted the alumni office.

 

I must say, they were extremely helpful. And fortunately, my grandaunt

was a very active "alum," and filled out every alumni questionnaire up

until shortly before her death. Through those, I was able to find her

husband and children's names and birth dates and even a greater surprise

-- the "cousins" listed as having attended the same college and the

approximate years of their graduations. I've now been able to locate

each of those families, and it helped greatly in tracking down the

living descendants.

 

So don't forget to give it the old college try!

Beverly Townsend Sustare at age 23, married Clara Nannie "Nancy" Williams, (her age was 22), I do not have the exact marriage date of Beverly and Clara Nannie, but it would be before 1914. Their first born son, Beverly Alexander Sustare was in 1914 (January 8, 1914, in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina and died Nov. 8, 1990 in Texas.)

Beverly and Nannie's 4 SUSTARE children were:

i.Beverly Alexander Sustare*,of Florida and Texas, born 8 January 1914, and died 18 November 1990.

ii.John Williams Sustare, of Nashville, North Carolina, born 10 January 1917, and died 11 July 1991.

iii.Nancy Chester Sustare Sutton (3rd born) born November 17, 1920 in Greensboro, North Carolina , has many relatives in Matthews. N.C., but Mamma was not born in Matthews, site of Sustare family Swimming Pool business.) died on 12, May, 1997.

iv.George Allan Sustare, born in Greensboro, North Carolina, On 10, Nov. 1922. 4th child and 3rd son of Beverly Townsend Sustare and Nancy Clara Williams.

*as per 1999 information from his son Dennis Sustare. I had thought his middle name was 'Allen' but Dennis wrote me that it was 'Alexander'.
