" Gabriel Sistare ,from whom
decended the Sistares in this Town, was born i the City of Barcelona, in
the Kindgdom of Spain, May 1st, 1726". Arrived in this town October
9th, 1771, in his Epitaph on the tombstone over Gabriel Sistare's grave in (New) London: "In memory of Captain Gabriel Sistare, who died February 26th, 1795, abt. 70 years. He was born in the City of Barcelona, Kingdom of Spain, 1725, and came to their City Oct. 14th, 1771, where he spent the remainder of his days, beloved by his neighbors, for he was charitable and humane; esteeemed by his friends, for he was upright and sincere; repected by his acquaintances, for he was a worthy man and a good citizen." (Note added: Lived in New London for 24 years.) _______ Teresa Sistare, b. 1797, daughter of Captain Gabriel Sistare (III) and Frances Deshon** Chew, married Captain James Baxter, whose daughter Catherine Baxter, b. 1827, married A. B. Farlin. Joseph Chew had a sister named Alice, who married Taylor, or Virginia and was the mother of ZACHARY TAYLOR, President of the United States. (**Captain Gabriel Sistaire (marked as Sistarre, in the Joseph Crew was the British Commissary during the war (of Independecnce) and his sones, William and John, had charge of the Indian Department. Captain Gabriel Sistare (III) commanded
his own "Some removals from other places of sepulture wher made immediately afterward, but the first remains not previously interred where those of an esteemed citizen, Josiph C. Sistare, who was here laid to rest Nov. 23, 1851." His son, Captain Leonard Sistare, commanded
the (Notes from 2 Newspaper articles below:) "Mrs. Sarah Lord Kobbé, who died yesterday in the seventy-ninth year of her age at the home of her son, George C. Kobbé, at Short HIlls, N. J., was the widow of William A Kobbé, who name will be recalled by many old-time New Yorkers. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Sistare of New London Conn.. Mrs. Kobbé had a large circle of friends in New York, but since her husband's death she had lived almost entirely in the country. She leaves a daughter, seven sons, and many grandchildren, all of whom, excepting a son and grandson in the army, live in or near this city, with which she ws so clearly identified, and which she saw grow from a provincial town."--New York Times, March 7, 1895. & "The death of William A. Kobbé, which occurred at his residence in this city last evening, is a painful surprise to his many friends, although it occurred in the 80th year of his age. Mr. Kobbé had been known to the New York business world for the last fifty years, first as the official representative here of the Duchy of Nassau, his native place, and later as a merchant. His integrity and character were beyound question, and socially he was a large hearted gentlemanof most winning and dignified address."--New York Evening Post, Sept. 30, 1881. |

Will post this info soon. March 25, 1998 CLS------ I believe the Outen family name was most probably of Dutch decent, an likely Van Outen, like the fine chocolate from Holland, and that the "Van" was dropped at a later date in America.
