NORFOLK- "Nancy Chester Sustare Sutton, 76, died May 12, 1997, at a local hospital of heart failure at 7:55 p.m. Born Nov. 17, 1920, in Greensboro, N. C., Chester was the daughter of Beverly Townsend Sustare* and Nannie Clara Williams Sustare. She was the grand-daughter of William Wright Williams and Lula Estelle Boatwright Williams and of Barnum Alexander Sustare and Sarah Amanda Ferguson Sustare. She was the wife of the late Robert William Sutton of Norfolk. Chester attended Sullins College. After attending Sullins College, Bob and Chester enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Chester was an avid homemaker and enjoyed artistic pursuits of pastels, floral arrangements, oil painting, and ceramics. Chester always completed any task in a beautiful way with attention to every detail. Chester is dearly loved by her children and was an inspiring role model to her husband, children, relatives and friends and a spirited individual. Chester was a member of Elizabeth River Woman's Club and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Chester is survived by her children, Nancy Townsend Sutton Nowlan of Suffolk and her husband, Thomas Wayne Nowlan, Carol Lorraine Sutton and her husband, Andre J.L. Fauteux of Toronto, Canada, and Robert Porter Sutton and his wife, Marcia Shipp Sutton of Dunedin, Fla. Survivors also include her grand-children, Amy Elizabeth Sutton of Jacksonville, Fla., Eric Townsend Sutton of Huntington Beach, Calif., Margot Elaine Nowlan of Suffolk, Viva-Laura Sutton-Fauteux and Yale Quentin Sutton-Fauteux of Toronto; and her brother, George Allen Sustare of Poquoson and his wife, Nancy J. Sustare, of Poquoson; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carl LeMon officiating. The family will recieve friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Maryview Medical Center, Care of Wellspring Hospice Program, 3636 High St., Portsmouth, Va 23707, the American Heart Association or to the Larchmont Baptist Church, 1127 Surry Crescent, Norfolk, Va. 23508." |

Named Chester Sustare after her uncle on her Mother's side, her mother's brother who was , Sgt. Chester Clay Williams. Nancy Chester Sustare was born two years after Chester Clay Williams died; on 17 November, 1920, in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. (117 Williams line) , Engineers, Rainbow Divison, of Hickory, North Carolina. Sighted for gallantry in action in Champagne- killed near Ligney, France, October 1, 1918. This naming was odd, in that Nancy Chester, was the only daughter in the family and was given a man's name. When she got older she had her name legally changed to add the Nancy; an became Nancy Chester Sustare. Sometimes called "Chessie", while at Sullins College, by "Red" her future husband, Robert William Sutton. Birth: 18 Oct 1884, Malvern, Hot Springs, Arkansas Died: 1 Oct 1918, Ligney, France, Battlefield in World War I. Father: William Wright Williams Sr. [16 Dec.1867-19 Jun 1938] Mother: Lula Estelle Boatwright [7 Feb 1872- 14 Sept 1954] relationship to Carol Lorraine Sutton: Great Uncle relationship to Nancy Chester Sustare {Sutton}: Uncle Notes: Chester Clay Williams was the brother of Nannie Clara Williams, son of Lulu Estelle Boatwright and William Wright Williams was his father. Sutton-Sustare Rites Celebrated At Bride's Home |

SUBHEADLINE READS- Marriage of Miss Dorothy Gilbert to William Anderson Announced ----------------------------------------- " The marriage of Miss Nancy Chester Sustare, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Beverly Townsend Sustare, and Robert William Sutton, son of Porter Odry Sutton and the late Mrs. Margaret Lorin Sutton, took place Saturday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents on Cambridge Crescent. The ceremony was performed before an improvised altar of palms and magnolia blossoms, by the Rev. J. B. Sawyer, pastor of Larchmont Baptist church, and was witnessed only by member of the immediate families. The bride entered with her father, by whom she was given in marriage. She wore an afternoon dress of soft gray, with accessories of white, and her flowers were a corsage of gardenias and valley lilies. Miss Laura Mae Powers, of Raleigh, N. C. was maid of honor, and only attendant. She wore a dress of ashes of roses, with leghorn hat, and accessories of white. Here flowers were a corsage of pink rose buds and blue forget-me-nots. The bridegroom had as his best man his brother, James Thomas Sutton. A small reception was held, after which Mr. and Mrs. Sutton left for a short wedding trip. Upon their return they will be at home at 1348 Magnolia Avenue, Larchmont." end of article. No picture.
