Carol believes she got her sense of color from Porter Ordy , who used such shades as "persimmon" {to paint the cork corbel in his home kitchen}, turquoise, and mustard shades with deep greens, dark browns, and chinese reds. Small accent colors like a sharp lemon yellow pillow. Lovely use of black. And I remember Pop having a full feeling for textures of things and materials. He loved all things Chinese. P.O. had the best of the best F. Schumacher & Co. drapes [ F. Schumacher & Co., 235 East 58th Street, New York City, New York, 10022, 1-212-735-6511] , a real full animal Zebra skin mounted on the wall of his den, which sort of horrified me as a child, and yet I was fascinated by its texture and drama. Nubby cloth things, velvet, smooth fine silks, and oriental carpets; all made up a potporri of different textures in their home. Just a magic world and completely unique and exotic. Full of mystery, this world was, and yet concrete in feeling. P. O. had a great sense of proportion and was a good editor, paring the number of objects in a room down for effect. He was also very consious of the flow of space from one room into the next. Yet he decorated each room differently and distinctly.Very refined taste was a clear hallmark of Pop'sinterior design style. Porter Odry had distinctive personal dress manners. P. O. always wore a lasso Western style pull at his shirt collar, so that he would not have to wear a typical long neck tie which might easily catch in machinery. During any given work day he would walk back and forth from the office section into the manufacturing machine plant upteen times. He had some shirts custom made of fine raw silks, choosing for example brown and black colors mixed together in a nubby texture.
Site Quote:"Welcome to Sutton Manufacturing Company. We manufacture the highest quality Commercial - Industrial - Marine grade Blowers all hand made, all USA Parts. These PROVEN quality blowers have been our mainstay for over 50 years. Meeting and exceeding Government standards."
Pop loved building things and thinking about mechanical things and the workings of machines. How do things work? Why do things work? Pop loved learning the answer. Very busy doing his own thing and not very concerned about being a good grandfather to his ten grandchildren.. Not wild about doing things with the grand children. Written with love for Porter Odry by Carol Lorraine Sutton, named after Lorine, his wife who died after a car accident and who is the namesake for Carol Lorraine. memories notes -jan. 24, 1998

Continued from last column - - - - It may seem to be an unusual combination of interest for someone to be an engineer and also be an interior decorator. But love of aesthetics and concern for the the way things look, their presence, and the way that they work or satisfy design usable functions, has been a link also inherited by the son of Porter Odry, Robert William Sutton, who had enginerring skills and photography and painting skills. Even the grave stone he design for his father and mother was well thought out: {from below on this same page: "P.O." was the one to design the spare and lean clean lines head tombstone and the smaller head stones and Pop choose the chisel latin type font and the beautiful red and grey/black swirl marble stone of the main center headstone, probably when his father , James E. Sutton ("Mack") was buried there in 1954. Pop's choice indicated his preference for bold design, clean lines, and a forceful statement, also very classy. Pop loved classy things. " Quote form obituary of Robert William Sutton: On the engineering side:""Working with motors from childhood, engineering training and a lifetime interest in motors and mechanical systems led to his founding of Sutton Manufacturing Corporation where he was owner and president. he designed all the products that were manufactured including blowers, bilge pumps, D.C. motors and fans. Some of these were utilized for all landing crafts in World War II. His windshield wipers were used exclusively by the U.S. Coast Guard. The products were used by companies worldwide. In addition, he was a consulting engineer of air movement or water movement applications. Quote form obituary of Robert William Sutton: On the photography/art/ design side:

My father Robert William Sutton is buried in the SUSTARE/SUTTON plot next to my mom, Nancy Chester Sustare Sutton. I have sadly lost both my parents recently. |
Indeed I believe Porter Odry, called nickname "Pop" or "P.O." was the one to design the spare and lean clean lines head tombstone and the smaller head stones and Pop choose the chisel latin type font and the beautiful red and grey/black swirl marble stone of the main center headstone, probably when his father , James E.
