2/3 of page 707 in the Davis book, by Nicholson, is given to the surname Clawson.
Quote:
"This line is given in connection with the SUTTON Line, as Cornelius Sutton's mother was JANE CLAWSON, daughter of Cornelius Clawson, Sr. whose Will [see will below] was probated 18 August 1758, Piscataway, New Jersey, in which he mentions his daughter as, JANE SUTTON. Jane's husband is not named in the Will or the papers pertaining thereto.

The name CLAWSON is a corruption of the Dutch name Claessen. Cornelius is an uncommon English name, but a common Dutch name. Cornelius is a new name among the Suttons of N. J. and the fact becomes obivious that Cornelius Sutton, Sr., was not born in England as some amateur family genealogists have claimed in the past.

The Clawson Family in America appears to originate with CLAES , or Nicholas, Corniliszen, b. in Holland 1597 (note added by Carol L. Sutton- This is the same name as the established art supply firm in London, England , located near the BRITISH MUSEUM, in which I have bought paints and also brushes in 1994.)
and probably came to New Amsterdam 4 march 1637 with his son Peter who was not over 12 years of age. He recieved a grant of land from the Government 1642 in what is now Brooklyn, New York.
WILLIAM CLAWSON AND JOHN CLAWSON were first settlers of Piscataway, New Jersey, and Garrabrant Clawson was a first settler of Bergen, New Jersey. All three appear to have been sons of the abouve named Claes Corniliszen, the immigrant.
WILLIAN CLAWSON, born about 1657 at Amersfoort, New York; married 9 Oct 1681 to Elsje Kroezen, daughter of Gerrett Groesen and Neeltge Jans.) They settled near New Brunswick, New Jersey about 1683 , and obtained land there in 1687.
His will (WILLIAM CLAWSON WILL) was probated in 1724. Two of his sons were:
i. Cornelius CLAWSON, born probably 1682, and died 1758 (WIll probated 18 August, 1758); married probably in 1702 or 1703 to Mary Breeze. Jane Sutton , mother of Cornelius Sutton is mentioned in the Will.
ii. Gerbrant CLAWSON, named after his uncle Captain Gerrbrant Classen.

The Clawson family in America appears to originate with Claes, or Nicholas, Corniliszen, b. in Holland 1597 and probably came to New Amsterdam 4 March 1637 with his son Peter who was not over 12 years of age. he received a grant of land from the Government 1642 in what is now Brooklyn, New York.

Does any one know what happened to this gerret, or were he went, he seems to be the forgoten son of William Clawsons(B.1657 Flatlands) it seems William was married first to Elsie Gerretz Croesen in 1681, had gerret in 1682, and then the rest of his (12 other Kids) Listed Family starts up in 1686 with his wife listed as Mary, or are they the same wife? Or is it a different William C. From what i have seen it semms to be the same William and that would give him 13 children instead of the 12 thats always listed

Anyone recognize this family, the mother of whom was Massie Harris of NJ? She was reputed to be of the family which founded
Harrisburg, PA. Massie was my 5G-grandmother via the Hoagland family.
Her husband John Clawson is said to be descended from William Clawson b. 1657 in Flatlands, Kings, NY, d. 1723 in Piscattaway,
Middlesex, NJ. William and wife Mary had 11 children: Mary, Lisabeth, Marie, Cornelius, Benjamin, Josias, William, John, Garrabant,
Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Drake & Hannah.

More notes on Jane Clawson:
It is interesting to note that the above fails to mention that if what is written is true the it is the case that Jane Clawson (named earlier Claessen, named earlier than that Corniliszen) married a man who shared the same first name as that of her father. In other words Jane was the daughter of a Cornelius and grew up an then married a Cornelius. Carol L. Sutton
