Triangle Barcelona Workshop

Quote: "Triangle Barcelona (1987) was the first workshop on the Triangle model held in Europe. It took place at the Casa de la Caritat (where the Centre de Cultura Contemporánia de Barcelona is now situated). Between 14th May and 1st June, 40 artists (19 painters and 21 sculptors) from Spain, Canada, UK and USA participated.

At the workshop artists made full use of space within the Casa de la Caritat, particularly a two-storey building, the top storey of which had been used as a theatre and also a large hospital nave of another building. The artists used materials available locally such as Vallejo paint, scrap metal brought from the Port of Barcelona, fence work from a municipal warehouse and materials taken from old workshops of the Casa de la Caritat. The artists were helped by assistants from local art schools.

The artists worked alongside each other, learning from each other in the process." more text below

HOW TRIANGLE STARTED OUT: Triangle keeps changing its name. It started out as Triangle Artist Workshop, the later became, Triangle Arts Trust, currently it has changed again to: Triangle Network.
As Anthony Caro described:
"The workshop was a very loose idea. We initially thought it was going to be for one year only. We thought: "Let's ask some people from Canada, the US and the UK, because they speak the same language. We'll stick them all together and see what happens". It was as loose as that! There wasn't much of a structure. During those two weeks people worked their asses off during the day and in the evening they swam in the pond, talked about art, whatever. There was an incredible sharing of ideas, knowledge and techniques. People were saying: "Have you tried this?"; "No, never seen it"; "Well, have a shot at it!".*

Quote:"The organisation of Triangle Barcelona coincided with the re-election of Pasqual Maragall as the Mayor of Barcelona who was keen to develop the Centre of Contemporary Culture at the Casa de la Caritat which today also houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. After the workshop, a 190-page catalogue written in Catalan, Spanish and English, including photographs of the artists and their work, was produced.

The workshop was funded by a grant from the Municipality of Barcelona.

miren_bustinza_i_prats.jpgA HELPFUL PERSON for those attending ART TRIANGLE BARCELONA : Miren Bustinza i Prats, representative of The British Council, 'Promoting cultural, educational and technical co-operation between Britain and other countries.'. Miren Bustinza i Prats, gave kind caring attention and most generous invitations to events, such as the Spanish Opera, [ Opera: 'Mar i Cel'.] while I attended Barcelona, Triangle and we became friends. Although Miren Bustinza i Prats was from the British Institute, she made a real effort to connect with the artists in the Barcelona Triangle Workshop 1987, as a true ambassador. Where were the Canadian ambassadors? or the American ambassadors? Miren and I ended up true friends; I, an American living in Canada, and Miren, a Spanish born, working for the British government. All very international. Miren I believe was born, near where Miro had his farm, in Mont roig del Camp, Catalunya, Tarragona region, Spain ( which is on the T-310 highway) and for some time had been repairing an old house there. A tiny village half way up the Red Mountain (where the name Mont Roig comes from.) These notes are in part from a letter that Miren Bustinza i Prats wrote to me in July 6, 1990. - and only 6 kms from the sea. I am very sad to write that Miren Bustinza i Prats was killed in a car accident driving to her old house. (Carol L. Sutton) (Map: google: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=Mont-roig+del+Camp,+Spain&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title)

BOARDING AND HOTEL

Quote: Although the artists worked together in the same space at the workshop, the artists living in Barcelona returned to their homes at the end of each day, separated from the visiting artists who were all put up in the same hotel in the City. This did not maximise the degree of the interaction amongst the artists expected at such a workshop. This point was well observed in the organisation of subsequent workshops." from: Triangle Arts Trust, EUROPE, Spain, Barcelona, Triangle Barcelona Workshop-

"Domenech coordianted this lavish exercise in interior design including the bar to the right of the entrance with its marble fireplace by Arnau, and the dining room with exquisite tilework decorated with sunflowers. The magnificent ballroom, furthest from the entrance and below the patio from which the hotel rooms are reached, is decorated with murals with an underwater theme by Ramon Casas. Domenech also supplied the wall decoration for the fight of stairs between the ground and first floors."

Lluís Domènech i Montaner Born: Barcelona, (December 21 1850 - Died: Barcelona, December 27 1923)

"The architect, historian and politician Lluís Domènech i Montaner studied in Barcelona and at the Madrid School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1873. In 1875 ha was named head of the department of composition and projects of the Barcelona School of Architecture, of which he was the director from 1901 onwards and in which he carried out a highly productive teaching activity. Professionally, the Universal Exposition of 1888 gave him the opportunity to construct the first works which made him popular: the Hotel Internacional and the restaurant of the Parc de la Ciutadella (known popularly as the 'Castle of the Three Dragons'). With this work he took a step ahead of the architectural currents of his time. He constructed other monumental buildings, including the Palau de la Música Catalana (1905-1908), the Lleó Morera house (1905) and the Fuster house (1908), and, between 1902 and 1912, the great monumental complex of the Hospital de Sant Pau.

He was the winner three times (in 1903, 1905 and 1912) of the Barcelona City Council's prize for the best building of the year."quote from this site.

Fauteux, André  - The Canadian Encyclopedia Author CLARA HARGITTAY

http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0002740

Quote: "Fauteux, André, sculptor (b at Dunnville, Ont 15 Mar 1946). He received his basic art education at Central Technical School in Toronto and worked with Anthony Caro (York University, 1974-75). Fauteux is known for the elegant, controlled line of drawing that characterizes his abstract sculptures. Profoundly influenced by the minimalist paintings of Kenneth Noland, Fauteux has successfully dealt with and transformed Noland's painterly concerns to his sculptures. The carefully articulated thin outlines enclose the volume of each work, but the flatness of the steel, the convergence of verticals and horizontals at sharp, dramatic angles, and the surrounding negative space defy the mass and weight of the sculptures. Fauteux's approach uses the interaction of geometric shapes as a point of departure in the building of a sculptural form. In 1987 he received the Francis Greenberger Prize from the Guggenheim Museum and was awarded a major commission by the city of Barcelona. Fauteux has exhibited regularly in Toronto, New York, Chicago, London and Barcelona and is represented in the collections of many Canadian and international museums."

Each institution donated contemporary art, which had its own particular characteristics distinguishing it from the others. The Government of Catalonia donated works by mainly Catalan artists, among these being Antoni Abad, Jordi Benito, Leandre Cristòfol, Joan Hernàndez Pijuan, Antoni Llena, Robert Llimós, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Àngels Ribé, Juan Carlos Robles, Francesc Torres, and Zush. In 1993 these holdings were enriched with pieces from the collection of the gallery-owner Salvador Riera, including works by George Condo, Enzo Cucchi, Joan Ponç and Antoni Tàpies. "

"Made up of 992 works, this body of work serves as a chronological itinerary extending from Dau al Set, via Informalism, the painting and sculpture of the 70s, and Catalan conceptualism, through to 80s art and new forms of pictorial expressionism. The younger generation of artists is well represented here. Barcelona City Council contributed works by established Catalan, Spanish and foreign artists. Among the artists represented in these municipal holdings are Sergi Aguilar, Joan Brossa, Anthony Caro, Xavier Grau, Ramon Herreros, Antoni Llena, Robert Llimós and Albert Ràfols-Casamada. Since that time her paintings and prints have been widely exhibited in Paris, Havana, Venice, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and elsewhere. She also served as a Professor of Art at the Escuela Eina, Barcelona, until 1970. In 1995 Maria Girona illustrated an anthology of poetry by Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Quote: "Terrence Keller, painter (Edmonton, in Alberta, 29 janv. 1947). Abstract painter of Edmonton, it is, in Canada, one of the principal contributors to the modern art to emerge in the years 1980 and 1990. He studies painting in Alberta College of Art of Calgary and obtains his diploma in 1973. After a short stay in Toronto, it turns over in the West to settle in Edmonton."
"Keller largely exposes its works, especially in the Canadian West, and takes part in the Emma Lake Artists Workshop (2000) and in the Triangle Artists Workshops in the State of New York (1982) and in Barcelona (1988), before are held to with it the Olympic Games. Since about thirty years, its style evolves/moves regularly. At the present time, it is one of the Canadian painters most accomplished of its generation."continues - - Author TERRY PEG WOOD

Wilhelm Boeck and Jaime Sabartés
Published by: Harry N. Abrams Company, 1955
from page 262- "Sabartés, who was with him in those anxious days, has described the unusual method Picasso adopted for this painting. He began by covering three walls of his studio with canvas, and trimmed it down to size only after he had painted it. " end quote. This is exactly the method used by the living master painter, Lawrence Poons. While during the Barcelona Triangle Workshop of 1987, Lawrence Poons, hung the walls of an entire room with canvas, forming a circle that he painted inside, filling the whole with masses of bold contrasting color and working to build up a heavy texture and even added three dimensional objects to the surface texture of the painting; later after completion, this canvas was cropped and cut, and then stretched and framed.

"I strive for a complicated simplicity. My color, line and form; all are interchangable. None exist without the others. My art is the art of paradox... tense, yet flowing... soft, and strong... romantic, and tough.... formless, and structured.... simple and complex. In other words, a combination of impossibilities. Most important of all, is light.... made from a combination of varied surfaces.... washes, impasto, mixed media, contrasts and tonal variations... which (for me) is the life of all successful painting no matter what the subject."

  # 4: "When one of the panellists, Kevin Power, deputy director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid, spoke frankly about the constraints and challenges of his job, referring to the real threat of political interference in the Reina Sofía, Juncosa, who was his predecessor in Madrid, chided him gently for his negative attitude and effectively sidestepped the question of political intervention in or influence on the programming of IMMA. "

QUOTE: "In the ensuing discussions Power made some of the most interesting contributions, highlighting the necessity for curators to break out of the Eurocentric bias that affects their selections of artists, both within public museums and at the international biennales, where curators wield enormous power. He warned against the same small group of artists being shown everywhere, with international freelance curators duplicating each other's work, creating a narrowly homogeneous view of what contemporary art is and could be.
