ANDRE FAUTEUX AND CAROL SUTTON
LIVED IN THE HISTORIC BUILDING, THE POULTON BLOCK, ORIENT HALL or Masonic
Lodge, 1885-1886,, A FREEMASON LODGE, built in Toronto in 1885, by the architects
Kennedy, Gaviller & Holland, at the NW corner of 792 Queen Street East
and 2 Boulton Avenue. This building was adopted by City Council on Dec.
10, 1975, as an Historic Architecture building of Toronto history.
-
- Extra notes: Famous
artists André Fauteux and Carol Sutton lived in the historic building
on the corner of 2 Boulton Avenue and 792 Queen Street East, called the
"Poulton Block", originally built as "Orient Hall",
a Freemasons lodge, as inscribed on a plaque just above the 2nd floor row
of windows, now covered over with cement. André Fauteux and Carol
Sutton were married in their apartment loft at the Poulton Block, 2 Boulton
Avenue on June 25, 1977. André lived and had his studio there for
about fifteen years and Carol lived there for six years. We used to have
a joke about the Poulton plaque. It was that the man carving the letters
Boulton, stopped for lunch, while working on the "B", and left
with only the upper portion of the circle loop carved, thus the "P",
but when he returned from lunch, he forgot to complete the bottom of the
"P", which would have made it a "B" for Boulton. But
this was a joke, as the true naming for the Poulton Block was based on
a man named 'Poulton', and it just so happened to be on the corner of Boulton,
and Queen St. East. Walking east past Boulton Avenue, the next street is
DeGrassi Street. Another joke, my friend David Neave, got in a Toronto
cab, " {Take me to} DeGassi please." "hey, no man",
replied the cab driver, "I don't sell that stuff in my cab."

- Nearby is a three storey hotel , The
New Edwin Hotel at 650 Queen East at Carroll Street (M4M1G5).,
which is a building inspired by Italian architecture. This is a very handsome
building in a warm buff tone brick, as can be seen on the upper level,
past the street level, which sadly has be stuccoed. The windows in the
building have curvered tops, and the roof overhangs the main wall of the
Carroll Street side of the building. Opposite The New Edwin is a new coffee
cafe, "Alway have time For Coffee'. The owner is Rob.

- (Second) Then if you walk East
the next building of note is a former CIBC Bank Building on the
corner of Grant Street and 744 Queen Street East on the North side
of Queen, It has a curved front facade with four imposing doric columns,
a central door flanked by two symmetrical windows. Both these window and
the door have a half circle carved ornamental above them. The upper row
of windows are of a square shape and all in all the architecture is very
pleasing to the eye. This building has a great sense of scale.

just half a block down at the corner of Saulter Street is the former post

- Fauteux, André
- Fauteux, André, sculptor (b at Dunnville, Ont 15 Mar 1946).
He received his basic art education at Central Technical School in Toronto
and worked with Anthony Caro (York University, 1974-75). Fauteux is known
for the elegant, controlled line of drawing that characterizes his abstract
sculptures. Profoundly influenced by the minimalist paintings of Kenneth
Noland, Fauteux has successfully dealt with and transformed Noland's painterly
concerns to his sculptures. The carefully articulated thin outlines enclose
the volume of each work, but the flatness of the steel, the convergence
of verticals and horizontals at sharp, dramatic angles, and the surrounding
negative space defy the mass and weight of the sculptures. Fauteux's approach
uses the interaction of geometric shapes as a point of departure in the
building of a sculptural form. In 1987 he received the Francis Greenberger
Prize from the Guggenheim Museum and was awarded a major commission by
the city of Barcelona. Fauteux has exhibited regularly in Toronto, New
York, Chicago, London and Barcelona and is represented in the collections
of many Canadian and international museums.
