'Belgium Vase Speaks to Me' by Carol Sutton

Size: 15" x 11" or 38 cm x 27.9 cm
Date: November 24, 1994

Materials: acrylic on Stonehenge archival paper

Mixed Media on Paper, from a group of approximately. 5 different ones with similar colours, based on the source of a actual set of dresser or vanity vases that were made in Belgium, purchased in Toronto from Mr. Wienswag (? on the spelling of his name) at 'The Art Frame Shop' on College near Clinton Avenue, who claimed to have bought them in Paris, France. I went there to have my picture framing done and occassionally made a purchase of some ceramics, such as the Belgium vases. I also did a number of paintings on canvas based on the colours within these vases. The vases were mainly black, with gold strips, and the colors of medium dark green, golden yellow and a rose. Mr. Wienswag was an artist himself , who painted fine landscape in a straight delivery style, some of which were of Tunisia, and his wife was also an artist. Her name was Rae Simone, she did large and tiny pencil drawings in a surrealist manner. I bought one of her untitled tiny ones , which is #113 or #40. and have had it hanging in my studio for over 25 years. Mr. Wienswag sold art on the streets of Paris from a folder frame after being a Holocaust survivior. Their shop was a memorable one and a great addition to the College Street "Little Italy" area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

description= A group of a 3 part vertical SET-CUT painting. This group has one wide central painting and two narrow side panels.These SET-CUT paintings were based on my idea of ending the cropping pictures of paintings by slicing off the edges after the work was finished and instead making the cut prior to painting the piantings. The 3 paintings are meant to stand alone as individual paintings. This ---

description= A group of a 3 part vertical SET-CUT painting. This group is made up of tree unequal sized panels. A wide left, a narrow center, a mid-sized right panel. These SET-CUT paintings were based on my idea of ending the cropping pictures of paintings by slicing off the edges after the work was finished and instead making the cut prior to painting the paintings.
