?1. #4 is correct - Buddha figures

What figures or monuments jointly represent spiritual force, symbols of peace, and religion?

1. dolomite
2. Obelisk
3. Crowns
4. Buddha figures

The Answer is:

Buddha

"What are Buddha figures?

Place = Korea

Buddha figures such as the carved granite stone one in cave-temple at Sokkuram, Kyongju, made during the Great Silla Dynasty, 8th century. (height of Buddha including pedestal 5.15 meters.)(Color plate on page 99 of the first book listed below.) are a most perfect symbol of peace. A peace both in body and spirit and a peace that transcends time.

Buddha statures or figures represent the Buddha."The Buddha was a human teacher, not a god; having attained Enlightenment, bodhi, which is nibbana, he spent the rest of his life trying to teach other how to do the same."guid.jpg,Buddha Sokkuram granite stone one in cave-temple at Sokkuram, Kyongju, made during the Great Silla Dynasty, 8th century.

The Great Silla Dynasty of Korea culture was in close link with the Chinese Tang Dynasty culture, both prosperous periods. Buddhism dominated the entire society of the Great Silla period. This golden age of Korean art created many splendid temples filled by statues of Buddha made in stone as Korea is rich in stone.

The Meitreya Buddha, a bronze figure, Three Kingdoms period, 6th century, located now in Toksu Palace Museum of Fine Art (height 28.5 cm, shown on page 90) is another sublime example of Buddhist art. This delicate bronze work is in complete contrast to the solid massive stone work of the Buddha of Sokkuram, Kyongju. Its slightly tilting head, thin willow body with arching curved arms sits as perfection in perfect proportion to the lotus leaf base, that rests upon yet another base with open cut work. The sculpture of this Buddha is pure drawing expressed with deep emotion, depth of feeling and trace like intuition.

What French artist used a image of a lion watching over a sleeping man as act of giving peace?

1. Gustave Flaubert
2. Emile Zola
3. Honore Balzac

5. Edgar Allen Poe

The Answer is:

Henri Rousseau

The Sleeping Gypsy

;The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau (1897)

Douanier's Lion as a Sleep Watcher- In Rousseau's work the sleeper is not some supine central female full of feminine charm but is instead a man dresses in a coat consisting of all the hues and colors of the world, a veritable color chart of man's color coded states of being. The lion however tempted by hunger has stopped still , (in fact the whole of the tableau is in a state of eerie stillness) and decided not to eat the resting man, who appears to be free of superstitious fear; perhaps the lion is lured into a calm state by the sentient presence of the full round moon. Nothing creaky here. The lion is awake. The man is asleep. "Invariably the encounter with sleep implies opportunity."(Leo Steinberg). Yet, the lion does not take his opportunity to eat the man or to cut down an enemy in his slumber , as in Artemisia Gentileschi's 'Judith beheading Holofernes', and rather almost offers himself as a sentinel figure, standing guard over the man to allow him to rest in peace. The lion with the patience of Job, bearing witness to the man in his fragile state of sleep is echoed by this now silent musical instrument, resting at his side as if it were his life mate. This act of giving is a symbol of Peace, in fact the entire painting rings out - sings out - 'be at peace". The lions tail swings out to capture and hold the space of the painting on the left side, as if the tail is a sort of wet finger held aloof in the wind in order to gauge the direction of the wind. Serenity and balance. (C. Sutton)

Rousseau hit a stroke of genius by having the stick's light and shadow side read as just another stripe of color in the garment and he brilliantly highlighted strings of the music instrument to echo the stripes.

PICASSO & HENRI ROUSSEAU-- A FEW NOTES
To label Henri Rousseau as a naive painter is a great mistake. Picasso knew better and he did not.
.*Picasso thought that Henri Rousseau was a modern painter. Rousseau thought of himself as a modern painter and once said to Picasso. "We are the two greatest painters of our time, you in the Egyptian style and I of the Modern style."

--If Picasso's understanding and respect for Henri Rousseau was a gauge of taste, was avant garde thought in action, or was an intuitive understanding for Rousseau's intrinsic value as an artist; then many more people and art historians would believe that Henri Rousseau was a great modern artist and not label him as a naive painter. Picasso trusted his own basic intuition for finding quality in art, and this intuition lead him to the "The Douanier" or "The Customs Officer".To label Henri Rousseau as a naive painter is a great mistake. Picasso knew better and he did not.

Picasso used progress made by Rousseau in his art, to enhance and bring out aspects that he was striving for within his own art. Picasso gave a much written about dinner in Rousseau's honor and owned a number of his paintings. Picasso said of Rousseau, "Rousseau represent the perfection of a certain kind of thought." PICASSO AND HIS BIRDS

Picasso

 INTRODUCTION

Picasso and his birds!
JUST BIRD TALK - In my studies on Picasso I somewhere came across a quote by Picasso that said something like, " a pigeon would be a better peace symbol than a dove, because a pigeon is more passive bird and doesn't attack like a dove sometimes can." After spending half a day and going through over 15 Picasso books I give this task of identifying this quote on to my readers; that is just when and where and to whom did Picasso say this pigeon/dove quote.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) began in London with 41 nations signed on in 1945. Recently UNESCO commissioned Japanese architect Tadao Ando to design a symbolic building that would mold the ideas of its organization .The result was a tower called the Meditation Tower built and added to the Paris complex between the secretariat building and the conference building.

This UNESCO complex in Place de Fontenoy, was a joint design project that originally included architects Marcel Breuer, Bernard Zehrfuss and Pier Luigi Nervi. Many other architects and artists assisted in the project. Isamu Noguchi designed The Garden of Peace.
