Aqua Claudia Across Campagna SET-CUT, a painting on canvas
by Carol Sutton
Date: August 17, 1985
Series: Set-Cut Series
Note: Center section: Aqua
Claudia Across Campagna SET-CUT.
Other notes: My first 'SET-CUT' painting made up
of 3 sections that are horizontal. My thinking was to set the 'cut
point' in advance of doing the painting; i.e. not to 'crop out' any
part or section of the whole after the painting was finished. Most of
these work both as a 'whole' or with all sections together; or as
individual stand alone art works. I also like the visual function of
the unexpected look of where the edge was, or is. And I am not
painting to the edge. C.L.S. notes May 2013.
This is a bridge inspired image. Specially that of the bridge / aqueduct 'Aqua Claudia' that bought water to Rome. Built by Emperors Caligula and Claudius. It had high arches and crossed Campagna. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqua_Claudia. Website: http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Places/Property/944972
This image in addition is also inspired by Ingres
painting of
Madame Moitessier 1856. LINK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madame_Moitessier
There are two other sections. The top section title is: Aqua Claudia SET-CUT, Date August 17, 1985 A #1, 32.5 x 91 inches, Sold via Gallery One to Daniels Equities, Toronto, ON.
The lower section title is: Aqua Claudia Single Arcade SET-CUT , Date August 17, 1985 C #3, 32.5 x 91 inches,
Media: Golden Acrylics paint on cotton canvas
Size 33 x 91 inches or 83.8 cm x 231.1 cm

of
